Sick
Written by Karen
Monday, 11 December 2006

Kristy fell sick again. She started to have a fever and flu since last Friday. Highest temperature was 38.3°C. As we still have some medicine at home, we decided to feed her first. Would only bring her to see GP/PD if it gets serious.

Her fever kept going up and down these few days. The medicine did not seem to be working. And her cough got more serious. Could hear that there was plenty of phlegm in her throat. So I decided to bring her to my GP to take a look.

When we were there, her fever had somehow subsided so there was no trace of any fever. Doc checked her throat and found out that she had mild bronchitis. She said there was traces of phelgm in her passageway. She prescribed her some medicine for her flu and fever and also antibiotics.

Just now mother called and said Kristy's fever came back again. The temperature was at 38°C again. Sighz. Hope she would get well soon to enjoy this merry festive season. It really break my heart to see her suffer so much.

She had become very much grouchy and would always want you to carry her. Even when she was sleeping at night, you could hear her hard breathing and could feel that she was not sleeping well. She would sometimes cry in her sleep. Maybe her nose was so blocked that she could not breathe properly. She would also breathe through her mouth, thus coughly much too. I guessed I would have to stop using the aircon these few days.

Last night while playing with Kristy, I spotted her 10th and 11th tooth. Her upper right and left first molars. :)

So now she has a total of 11th pearlies. Awaiting the arrival of her lower left first molar. :p

Finally, the long awaited 9th tooth is out! Heehee. I happened to peep into her mouth while she was shouting away last Friday night. And there I saw it, the white pearly right lower first molar is out. I have a feeling the rest of the first molars will come popping out very soon. :p

Will update the tooth chart later. :)

More words

Kristy could say more words now. She would say "Ah Buutt" when a bus passed by. She could now call "Auntie" and "Uncle" too. 1 word that surprised me was "vegetable". She could pronounced this 3-syllabus word correctly.

She's more willing to open her golden mouth nowadays. And would mouth after us. She could say a sentence, "po-po, gai gai~". Keke

DPT/PT 1st Booster

Finally, it was the day of her final jab in the 5-in-1 package and also her 18th month assessment. :p

Mother brewed barley water for her to drink, hoping to prevent her from getting any fever from the jab. We left the house at around 1.30pm as the appointment time was 2.15pm. We got the queue number and waited outside the room. During the waiting time, there was a malay kid. She wanted to play with Kristy but Kristy, not sure what happened to her today, was not interested to play with her. And the malay girl was so sad and kept following Kristy but Kristy simply ignored her. So "dao".

Soon after, our queue number was displayed on the counter. I brought Kristy in. The nurse asked normal routine questions. Kristy had her height taken, 86.5cm and weight is 12.45kg. Head circumference is at 46.8cm. Nurse said all measurements are above average. Then she went to prepare the jab materials while we looked on. I held on to Kristy and the nurse jabbed on her right thigh. This time, the moment the needle was poked in, Kristy started to cry. It was unusual. She normally would not cry till the needle was extracted out. This time, she cried, and it was for quite a long while. We had to wait outside the room for 15 minutes and let the nurse check the jab wound before we could proceed to the other room for assessment.

During the assessment, the doctor asked the same questions as was stated in the health book. Everything was normal. The doctor checked on Kristy's eyes, pressed her tummy and checked her private parts. Kristy giggled when the doctor touched her. It must be itchy. :p

We left the polyclinic after all was done. When we reached home, we saw that the jab wound was bigger than the previous jab wounds. It was very red too. I wondered if this jab needle is bigger than the previous jabs, thus the bigger jab wound or was it due to the nurse?

Kristy had fever on the same day during evening. Temperature went up till as high as 38.3°C. Fed her panadol immediately and pasted the cooling patch on the forehead. The fever lasted for 2 days before it went off.

Success!

Kristy is now officially off her pacifier. :p Been very lazy to update her blog till now. It took almost a week or so for her to forget about her pacifier. During this period, my heart softened more than once, nearly wanting to give her back the pacifier. But I told myself I couldn't do that. If not, it would become even harder to wean her off.

It was quite okay till we were on father's car. Normally, when we went in the car, Kristy would ask for her pacifier and we would pass it to her. But not this time, and she kept whining. We had to keep distracting her so as not to affect my father. It was terrible, really terrible. She whined non-stop till I had to take out the secret weapon. A gummy sweet. She stopped soon after but kept requesting for the sweet once she had finished it. Sighz. But I am glad to say now that all is over now.

Ooo yah, we had also weaned her off the milk bottle. She is now drinking her milk from a training cup. This is also going on well except that there is more spillage. Mother said might as well wean her off the milk bottle since the pacifier project is successful. So I agreed to it. No more sterilising anymore. :p

Project: Pacifier Weaning
Written by Karen

Today is already the 3rd day since the project had started. It was not planned at all. It all started on 1st October night while I was patting Kristy to sleep. She took out her pacifier and played and accidentally threw it onto the floor. As it was dark and I was lazy, I told Kristy that the pacifier was gone. She had threw it away and now it was gone. She whined for a while but eventually fell asleep due to tiredness. I got out from my bed to look for the pacifier but could not find it so I asked hubby to find and turned out that the pacifier was thrown under Kristy's cot. We kept the pacifier out of her sight from then on.

I told my mother to keep the pacifier at her house out of Kristy's sight too. She would too whine a bit before she fell asleep. My mother had to scold her or use the cane to scare her in order for Kristy to lie down properly and sleep during the morning and afternoon naps.

The 2nd night without pacifier was terrible for her. She whined till very terribly. My heart was softened but I told myself I could not restart the pacifier thing again. If not it would be much harder to wean off next time. She whined for a long while and I kept trying to coax her. Soon I think she knew that her pacifier was really gone. She seemed to understand and resign to it.

Last night was much better. She did not whine but was talking some baby language like venting her anger. I think she is slowly getting used to her pacifier-less days. Luckily enough she did not wake up in the middle of the night to ask for her pacifier for the past 2 nights except for the first night. She seemed to sleep more soundly than with pacifier.

Hope in another week or so, she will forget about her pacifier. I know it is hard on her but like all parents will say, it is for her own good. :) :p

New words

Kristy had added some new words into her "dictionary". She now knows how to say 哥哥 (gor-gor), 妹妹 (mei-mei), 弟弟 (di-di), 姐姐 (di-di), 阿姨 (ah-yi), 奶奶 (nai-nai)爺爺 (ye-ye). But she still doesn't know how to call 公公. My father must be very sad. :p

Heehee, I finally managed to record her voice when calling me. I've recorded two. The first one is just 媽媽 while the other file captures her calling me, hubby and my mother. :p

Chicken Pox Jab
Written by Karen
Friday, 08 September 2006

Kristy had her chicken pox vaccine on Wednesday. She was supposed to have this vaccine last month but due to flu, it had to be postponed. Hubby came with me to the polyclinic since both of us were on leave. While waiting for our number to be called, Kristy had her fun by walking around the place and "socialising" with the people there. She even pulled her Strawberry Shortcake dress and sort of showed the people, indicating 靚靚 (pretty).

When our number was called, I carried Kristy in. As the policy by this clinic is to allow only 1 adult, hubby had to wait outside. While inside the room, Kristy insisted to walk on her own, so I let her be. One of the nurses helped to entertain her while I answered the other nurse's questions.

Soon it was time for the jab, I carried Kristy to the other chair for jab. As the nurse was preparing the needle for injection, I looked on. When I saw the long needle, I started to shiver. I had always had this fear for injections. :p Then I asked the nurse "Wah, the needle so long ah." She just smiled back. Haha. When the needle was poked into Kristy's left arm, she looked at me and said "Orrrrrrr" shockingly. She started to cry a while when the needle was pulled out. I had to carried her up and walked around the room to distract her.

And very soon after that, she forgot abt the pain and started to run around the room. Oh yah, her weight is now 12.5kg. Forgot to ask the nurse to help measure her height. Will have to wait till next month when she has to come back for her 18th month assessment and the DPT/PT Booster jab.

No fever for this jab. Lucky. :)

Can? Cannot?

My mother taught Kristy to shake her palm left and right for cannot. And below are some conversations to test if she understands.

婆婆:可不可以打婆婆?
Kristy: *shakes palm*

Then I decided to test her if she understands it in English before she sleeps last night. :p

Me: Can you beat mummy?
Kristy: *shakes palm*

Keke, she understands and I'm amazed. :p

Yes...No....

You have started to associate yes to nodding your head and no to shaking your head. It always bring a hearty laugh to us whenever you do any of the actions.

When you nod, you will place both of your hands at the back of your head and push your head down. Po-po said maybe you taught that nodding is this way because whenever po-po asked you to nod, you never understand. So po-po will place her hand behind your head and help you to nod. And so you have to push your head whenever you nod now.

And when you shake your head, it's like you just had a dose of ecstasy. You will keep shaking non-stop which is quite a funny sight.

Time has really passed by fast. You're soon approaching 17 months. And you have really grown up. Fast. Too fast. When we tried to look back, sometimes we cannot remember your milestones, what have you learnt, etc. Looking back at the photos will bring back fond memories when you were younger. And it will always make us smile, at least for me.

Kristy, you would forever be our precious darling. Though your behaviour is getting more and more out of hand recently but I believe that you will be better behaved as time goes by. We will always love you.
